Privacy policy

Last updated: 08/10/2026

bakt respects your privacy. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, and how we look after it, in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA).

Who is responsible for your information

bakt is the responsible party for your personal information.
Information Officer: Zandeleen
Address: 309 Lucky bean, Pretoria
Email: info@bakt.co.za

What we collect

  • Orders: your name, email, phone number, delivery or billing address, order details and any notes you add (for example, a gift message or delivery instructions).
  • Corporate enquiries: your name, company, contact details, order details and, if you’re sending gifts to several people, your recipients’ names, addresses and phone numbers.
  • Mailing list: your name, email address and the interests you choose when you sign up.
  • Allergy or dietary information: only if you choose to tell us, so we can advise you on your order.
  • Messages: anything you send us by email, WhatsApp or our contact form.

We don’t store your card details. Payments are processed by Yoco / Ozow, under their own privacy policy.

Why we use it

We use your information to:

  • prepare, deliver and invoice your order
  • reply to your questions and enquiries
  • send our newsletter, if you’ve signed up for it
  • keep the financial records the law requires

We never sell or rent your information.

Who we share it with

We share your information only when we need to get your order to you, with:

  • couriers, who receive the recipient’s name, address and phone number
  • our payment provider, to process your payment
  • our website host hostking, where the site and its data are stored

Where a service provider is based outside South Africa, we use only providers that protect personal information to a standard comparable to POPIA.

Our mailing list

Our mailing list is managed with MailPoet and stored on our own website, not with a third-party email platform. We’ll only email you if you’ve signed up. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link at the bottom of every email, or by emailing info@bakt.co.za.

WhatsApp

Our site has WhatsApp links for questions. Tapping one opens WhatsApp, which is run by Meta, and your message and phone number are then handled under WhatsApp’s own terms and privacy policy. We use WhatsApp messages only to answer you and arrange your order.

Cookies

Our website uses cookies to keep your cart working and the site running smoothly. We also use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use the site. This information is anonymous.

How long we keep it

  • Order and invoice records: 5 years, as required for tax purposes
  • Mailing list details: until you unsubscribe
  • Enquiries and messages: up to 6 months after our last contact, unless they lead to an order
  • Corporate recipient lists and allergy information: deleted once your order has been delivered

Your rights

Under POPIA, you can ask us to:

  • tell you what personal information we hold about you
  • correct or update it
  • delete it, where we’re not legally required to keep it
  • stop using it for marketing

To make a request, email info@bakt.co.za, and we’ll respond within [30 days].

Complaints

If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your information, please talk to us first.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The latest version will always be on this page.

A few notes:

Retention: five years matches SARS’s general record-keeping requirement. Confirm with your accountant.

Information Officer: as a sole owner, you’re automatically the Information Officer under POPIA. You may also need to register on the Regulator’s eServices portal, so it’s worth checking.

Address: if you’d rather not publish your home address, a PO box or business address works.

Allergy info: health information counts as “special personal information” under POPIA, which is why I’ve kept the policy strict about deleting it after delivery.
